Over January I’ve been interning on Night Air Live – a summer programme that went to air every weeknight on ABC Radio National. It had a mix of experimental sound features, music selections, live music and other material. I had some excellent opportunities to produce feature material for airing over the three weeks. I relished this chance, and really improved my understanding of how a program like that is put together. Working with the staff there was a pleasure, and I’d count that as one of my more fruitful radio endeavors. I’d hope to continue some involvement with that program in the future, as it seems one of the few wide-reaching ‘experimental sound feature’ platforms in Australia. I have a few ideas brewing for sound features I’d like to produce – so this may be a good outlet.

As always I’ve been deeply ensconced in a variety of music over the last few months, cataloging some on my tumblr and in graveyards on 3RRR. I had the pleasure of doing a 8-10pm fill over the Christmas break which I loved for more reasons than just not having to be up from 2-6am (the graveyard shift). I particularly liked having to pull together a tight show for 2 hours, rather than 4, allowing me to really lock in on a particular sound rather than going in for the mixed bag.

Web-wise, I haven’t been too involved, other then keeping up to date (which is hard enough!) Looking to pursue some kind of web project over the next few months, but really stuck for ideas – may have to wait until an idea brews. And that’s it! No real reason for this post other than to remind myself of what I’ve been doing, and for the sake of keeping it on record!

Jason Waterhouse is a sculptor working out of an old butter factory that he and his wife have converted in to artist studios and a retail space. I visited Jason, ahead of his submission to the 2010 McClelland Sculpture Prize. This work explores Jason’s work for the Prize, his creative process, and the amazing environment he works in. My intention was to communicate the strong sense of place I felt when I visited his Kyneton ‘butter factory’, and capture his contagious energy. Along with 11 sound portraits produced about the shortlisted artists in the Prize, this audio work will be featured on the gallery’s website. The process of creating this work is documented in my blog.

When Rose and Murray walk through the rooms, I really felt like I was there. It was very echoey, and big – these are the types of things I want to communicate as well.

May want to talk to the tech’s about the best way to record things like that?

I loved when he talked about the works from the past that he didn’t like – would love to push that further (another time!). Murray spoke very eloquently – ums, ahs. Perfect interviewee. He talks in front of all the works he’s done and a lot about the marble – also great material to use.
